Mahbish’s story: Empowered to dream
Mahbish’s journey is a powerful example of how the British Asian Trust and BT Group are empowering young women through education and technology, helping them shape their futures.
Originally from Lakhimpur, a city in Uttar Pradesh, Mahbish’s family faced relentless financial hardships. Her father moved to Delhi in search of work, while her mother worked tirelessly in a garment factory for a meagre salary. Their low earnings combined with the responsibility of caring for ailing family members meant financial stability remained just out of reach.
When Mahbish was sent to live in a hostel in Lucknow, she faced intense bullying by her seniors and her education suffered. Feeling lost and alone, she returned to Delhi.
A turning point came when Mahbish was introduced to Katha Lab School, by a former student. This school in New Delhi is supported by the British Asian Trust and BT Group. It empowers adolescent girls by equipping them with the skills and confidence to shape their own futures, integrating life skills, STEM learning and career-building opportunities into education.

At Katha, Mahbish found a place that offered more than just academics - a place where she could belong. Initially timid and reserved, she soon blossomed and formed strong bonds with her teachers and classmates. “It wasn’t just a school; it became my second home. I was afraid I’d face the same challenges as before,” she admits. “But here, I was welcomed with open arms. I started to believe in myself.”
Her transformation was remarkable. From a hesitant student, she became an active participant in academics and extracurricular activities. She worked diligently and secured an impressive grade in her Class 10 exams, an achievement that fuelled her hunger to learn more and succeed.
The programme’s focus on STEM and IT-based learning introduced Mahbish to a world where technology could be a tool for empowerment. She developed a passion for animation and digital storytelling, working with her peers to create learning materials for children in remote areas. “Technology has the power to change lives,” she says. “I wanted to use it to help others, just as I had been helped.”

Her dedication didn’t go unnoticed. “Mahbish’s journey has been nothing short of inspiring,” says her teacher, Mrs. Mittali. “She grabbed every opportunity, never letting challenges hold her back.”
Mahbish secured an internship at Radiate Designs, where she manages data, works on Excel, and supports marketing efforts, for a paid internship. More than just an income, this opportunity is her first step toward financial independence and sharing her future on her own terms.
Mahbish’s dreams don’t stop here. Inspired by her mother’s struggles with health issues, she hopes to pursue a career in nursing, combining her skills in technology and healthcare to uplift her community. “I’ve seen how important good healthcare is,” she says. “I want to make a difference, to give back in whatever way I can.”
