Muttiah Muralitharan
Muttiah Muralitharan, known as Murali, is Test cricket’s most successful bowler and one of the greatest cricketers to ever spin a ball. Murali is the highest wicket-taker in both Test cricket (800) and One Day Internationals (515). The first wrist-spinning off-spinner in the history of cricket, he is celebrated for reinventing the art of spin bowling. Among his countless achievements, Murali is the only player to take 10 wickets in a Test in four consecutive matches, a feat he succeeded in twice. He is the first and only Tamil of Indian origin to represent Sri Lanka in international cricket. His work after the 2004 tsunami in Sri Lanka transformed Murali from a sports hero to a national icon.
It makes me very happy when the sports and charity worlds come together. It’s a very powerful combination that can really make a difference. I am proud to represent The British Asian Trust as an Ambassador so we can work together to transform the lives in communities hit hardest by poverty in South Asia and the UK.
